Dear Dan,

For many years the Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire-Rescue has provided a fire truck to be stationed at the Oyster Harbors Club during a hurricane or major flood.

After reviewing this policy, the Board of Fire Commissioners have decided we will no longer put a truck on the island during such an event as there are no facilities to house an engine or its crew.  Also, we feel it is most appropriate for all residents and guests to come off the island during a hurricane threat for their safety.  We cannot reach them for medical nor fire emergencies due to storm waters cutting off the causeway to Oyster Harbors, as well as countless areas on the island, which flood in the lower elevations, thus preventing fire apparatus to travel around the island.

We would encourage summer residents and their guests to return to their homes on the mainland, or if this is not possible, then to take advantage of the Town Emergency Shelters located at the Horace Mann Charter Middle School, 730 Osterville-West Barnstable Road, Marstons Mills, or the High School, 744 West Main Street, Hyannis, during such storms, until it is safe for them to return.

After reviewing the hurricanes around the country and our history of flooding here during hurricanes, the above action is the most prudent for the safety of the residents and guests of Oyster Harbors.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 508-957-8230.  Thank you.

Sincerely,

John M. Farrington
